o Us

‘Us’ is David Williams and Helen Stagoll, with help from our friends, especially Diane Robertson. AliasAsia was set up in November 2005 to enable us to pursue our interest in Asian textiles.

That year we found ourselves in Rajasthan for the second time to attend a family wedding of our rajput friends (and what a wedding it was!). We decided to extend that trip and choose a range of textiles and artefacts from trusts and small manufacturers and traders that we had come to know in Rajasthan and ship them to Australia. We have recently begun extending our buying to Gujarat.

Physically we are located in Alphington, an inner suburb of Melbourne, Australia. We sell at our advertised sales and exhibitions and at markets (check out EVENTS). Further information about us is contained in the electronic newsletter AliasAsia Threads that we send out to subscribers.

o Our products

Our products are largely handmade.

In India traditional processes have languished somewhat over the last fifty years but there is now a resurgent movement to train new artisans and to revalue and promote the production of fine hand crafted textiles. We want support this movement. The textiles we buy at the source, from trusts and from small local manufacturers and traders.

In doing so they also wish to educate and provide the opportunity for people in Australia to appreciate and acquire beautiful handmade articles and artworks at reasonable prices.
